Dedicated server in Germany: which campus and which hardware to choose

Germany offers the most varied choice of physical machines in Europe: budget builds on desktop processors sit next to dual-socket platforms with hundreds of threads. That makes plans harder to compare here than in other countries: the same price can mean completely different classes of hardware, and the bill for the first month depends on the setup fee. Below is what to look at when renting a dedicated server in Germany; the country's network and legal specifics for virtual machines are covered on the VPS in Germany page.

Frankfurt or Falkenstein and Nuremberg

Frankfurt is a network hub: it is home to the DE-CIX internet exchange, and most plans in the table are available there. Frankfurt sites usually sell servers with a higher entry price, but with good connectivity and fast ports. It is the choice for services with users across Europe, for load balancers, APIs and anything where latency to other networks matters.

Falkenstein and Nuremberg are large data-centre campuses in Saxony and Bavaria with thousands of identical machines. They more often offer inexpensive configurations on Intel Core and Ryzen and standard builds whose specs can hardly be changed: an extra disk or more memory is installed for a separate fee and not on every model. Latency from Moscow to both campuses is almost the same as to Frankfurt, usually within 35–50 ms, and from elsewhere in Europe the difference is just as small, so choose by hardware and terms rather than ping.

Processors: from Core i5 to dual-socket Xeon

About a third of the plans run on AMD EPYC, roughly the same share on Xeon of various generations, and the rest on Ryzen and Intel Core. Each class solves its own task:

  • Intel Core and Ryzen range from the old i7-6700 and Ryzen 5 3600 to Core i5-13500, Core Ultra 7 265 and Ryzen 9 7900. High clock speed, few memory slots, usually no ECC. Good for game servers, code builds and sites with a moderate database. More on desktop chips in a server role in the selection of dedicated servers on Ryzen.
  • Xeon E and E3 are a compromise: the same high-clock architecture, but with ECC support and a server motherboard.
  • EPYC and Xeon Gold/Silver offer dozens of cores, hundreds of gigabytes of registered ECC memory and many PCIe lanes for NVMe. They are needed for virtualisation, large databases and analytics.

The median machine here has 16 cores and 64 GB of memory, but the spread is huge, so filter the table by processor model and not only by core count.

Port, traffic and one-off fee

A gigabit port comes with more than half of the plans, but quite a few offers ship with a 3, 5 or 10 Gbit/s port right away. A fast port is useful if the server distributes files, receives backups or acts as a CDN node; virtual machine plans with such a link are collected on the VPS with a 10 Gbit/s port page. About half of the offers have unmetered traffic; the rest have a limit in terabytes, and going over it is either billed or throttled.

More than half of German plans charge a one-off setup fee. It is usually comparable to one month of rent, and on powerful configurations it can be more. Some hosts waive it if you pay a year in advance. If you need the server for a couple of months of testing, a plan with hourly billing and no setup fee is almost always cheaper.

Disks, protection and management

About two thirds of the machines come with NVMe, and some plans have large HDDs, which are used for archives and backup storage. Before ordering, check whether RAID is built in hardware or you are expected to set it up yourself with mdadm, and whether a spare disk is kept on site. DDoS filtering is included almost everywhere, but most often it is basic network-level protection rather than filtering of HTTP requests. On budget campuses, the KVM-over-IP remote console is often provided on request for a few hours rather than permanently; if you plan to install your own system image, check this in advance.

Most sites take payment for a dedicated server in Germany by international card or PayPal, while Russian cards and SBP (Russia's fast payment system) are accepted by a minority of plans, shown in the "Payment" column. If you need a location closer to Moscow with a similar hardware range, compare with dedicated servers in Poland.

FAQ

Which to choose in Germany: Frankfurt or Falkenstein?

Frankfurt sits next to the DE-CIX exchange and offers better connectivity to other networks, while Falkenstein and Nuremberg more often offer inexpensive standard machines. Latency from Russia and most of Europe to them is almost the same, so hardware and price decide.

Can I get the setup fee back if the server does not suit me?

Usually not: the one-off payment covers preparing the machine and is not refunded on cancellation. If you want to test a server, look for a plan with hourly billing and no setup fee.

Do Intel Core servers have ECC?

Desktop Core chips usually run without ECC, and for Ryzen support depends on the motherboard and the host. If data integrity matters, choose Xeon E or EPYC, or check ECC in the plan.

Can I add a disk or memory to a rented server?

On server platforms you usually can; it is ordered as a paid add-on and sometimes requires brief downtime. Standard budget machines often have no free slots, so it is better to choose the capacity up front.

How long does it take to get a server in Germany?

Ready configurations are delivered within minutes or a few hours, and about a third of the plans in the table are activated right after payment. Custom builds with non-standard disks take up to several business days.

Does a website need a 10 Gbit/s port?

A gigabit port is enough for an ordinary website. A fast port pays off for distributing large files, receiving backups and CDN nodes where the link is constantly loaded.

How much does dedicated servers in Germany cost?

From 21.28 $ per month. A quarter of plans are cheaper than 140 $, half are cheaper than 269 $. In total 239 plans from 22 hosts.

Can I pay for dedicated servers in Germany by bank card or cryptocurrency?

By bank card at 16 hosts of 22 (73%), by cryptocurrency at 6 (27%). Payment methods for each plan are in the Payment column.

How much does dedicated servers in Germany with 2 GB of RAM cost?

From 21.28 $ per month; with 4 GB from 21.28 $, with 8 GB from 21.28 $.
