Physical server in London: network, UK law and latency

Almost all British plans in the table are located in London. The city hosts both Europe's financial sector and one of the largest internet exchanges, LINX, so its data centres are tightly connected to North America, continental Europe and the Middle East. A dedicated server in the UK is chosen when these routes, UK jurisdiction or an audience in English-speaking countries matter, not the lowest price.

Why these tasks get hardware rather than a virtual machine

London often runs systems that are sensitive to response stability: trading and payment gateways, quote aggregators, financial app back ends, game servers for a British audience. On a shared hypervisor processing latency jumps because of neighbours and the scheduler, while on a physical machine it is steadier and easier to measure. If a share of resources is enough for you, virtual machine plans in the same country are collected in the VPS in the UK selection.

Network: LINX, ports and attack filtering

Through LINX networks exchange traffic directly, bypassing transit, which gives short routes to British providers and clouds. A gigabit port comes with roughly two fifths of the plans, and about the same share ship with a 3, 5 or 10 Gbit/s port right away. DDoS filtering is included in practically every offer: for financial and gaming projects it is a must, but basic network filtering does not protect against application-level attacks. What else to check in protection is covered on the servers with DDoS protection page.

Latency from Moscow to London is usually 45–65 ms, slightly less from St Petersburg, and from continental Western Europe typically 5–20 ms. That is more than to Warsaw or Frankfurt for Russian users, so for projects with a Russian audience London is chosen only when law or partners require it. Amsterdam is closer to Russia and has similar connectivity.

Hardware: from Xeon E3 to EPYC

The British catalogue is uneven. The most common model is the old quad-core Xeon E3-1240 v5: such machines suit small services, a corporate VPN gateway or a backup node, but are slow for modern databases. About two fifths of the plans run on EPYC, there are new-generation Xeon Gold and a little Ryzen. The median machine has 16 cores and 64 GB of memory; about six plans in ten come with NVMe, the rest with SATA SSD or HDD. If you need Intel specifically for compatibility or licensing, compare generations on the dedicated servers on Xeon page.

More than half of the plans charge a one-off setup fee, and only a small share are activated immediately after payment. Allow from a few hours to a couple of days for preparation and calculate the cost of the whole first year.

Check the remote management terms separately. A console via IPMI or KVM-over-IP lets you reinstall the system and sort out boot issues without contacting support, while "remote hands" in London data centres cost noticeably more than on the continent. Ask how much an hour of an engineer's work costs, how quickly a failed disk is replaced and whether spare parts are kept on site.

UK GDPR and data transfers after Brexit

Since leaving the EU, the UK has its own version of the regulation, UK GDPR together with the Data Protection Act 2018, supervised by the ICO. The requirements almost match the European ones, and the EU recognises the British level of data protection as adequate, so personal data from the EU can be transferred to a server in London without additional contractual mechanisms. This decision is reviewed, and if it were revoked EU companies would need standard contractual clauses, so for critical systems keep a copy of the data in an EU country.

Dedicated servers in the UK are mostly paid for by international card or PayPal; Russian payment methods appear in only a handful of plans, shown in the "Payment" column.

FAQ

Do I need a data processing agreement with a British host?

Yes, if you process customers' personal data: UK GDPR, like the European regulation, requires a contract with the processor. Hosts usually provide a standard document in the panel or on request.

Can data be transferred from the EU to a server in London?

Yes, the EU recognises British data protection as adequate, and the transfer does not require additional mechanisms. The decision is reviewed periodically, so it is worth keeping an eye on.

How does British data protection differ from European?

In substance UK GDPR almost repeats the European regulation, but supervision is by the British ICO, not EU regulators. The UK sets its own rules for transferring data to third countries.

Is an old Xeon E3 good enough for a production project?

For a small website, a corporate network gateway or a backup node, yes. For a database with active writes or for virtualisation, EPYC or Xeon Gold with plenty of memory is better.

Does a dedicated server in London give stable latency?

More stable than a virtual machine, because there are no neighbours on the same processor. Network latency still depends on the route, and it is worth testing from a test IP to your customers.

How much does an engineer's work in a London data centre cost?

It is usually billed hourly, and London rates are higher than in continental Europe. Replacing failed hardware on a rented server is generally free; non-standard work you request is what gets billed.

How much does dedicated servers in the UK cost?

From 21.34 $ per month. A quarter of plans are cheaper than 170 $, half are cheaper than 336 $. In total 174 plans from 14 hosts.

Can I pay for dedicated servers in the UK by bank card or cryptocurrency?

By bank card at 9 hosts of 14 (64%), by cryptocurrency at 3 (21%). Payment methods for each plan are in the Payment column.

How much does dedicated servers in the UK with 2 GB of RAM cost?

From 21.34 $ per month; with 4 GB from 21.34 $, with 8 GB from 21.34 $.
