AMD EPYC server rental: what you pay for in the most expensive segment

EPYC for rent is not one category but three different classes of machine. At one end are compact single-socket servers on the AM5 platform, at the other dual-processor systems with hundreds of cores and hundreds of gigabytes of memory. EPYC plans have the highest average price among Xeon, EPYC and Ryzen, but the spread is huge, so first work out which series your task needs.

Three series found in plans

  • EPYC 4004 and 4005 (4344P, 4345P, 4464P, 4584PX). The server version of desktop Ryzen on the AM5 socket: six to sixteen cores, high clock speed, dual-channel DDR5 and official ECC support. Models with an X suffix carry extra 3D cache. In essence this is Ryzen with a server warranty and usually with a remote console.
  • EPYC 7002 and 7003 (Rome and Milan, 2019–2021). Up to 64 cores, eight DDR4 channels and 128 PCIe 4.0 lanes. The 7702P has 64 cores in one socket; such machines are often cheaper than new ones because they have already been through one rental cycle.
  • EPYC 9004 and 9005 (Genoa and Turin, since 2022). Twelve DDR5 channels, PCIe 5.0, up to 96 cores per socket on Genoa and up to 192 on Turin. In dual-socket Turin builds, the catalogue has machines with almost four hundred cores.

The letter P at the end of the number means a processor for single-socket boards only. It is not a cut-down model but a way to get many cores without the price of a dual-processor system. How the generations behave inside virtual machines is covered on the VPS on AMD EPYC page.

Memory and PCIe lanes: the platform's main advantage

Higher-end EPYC have six times as many memory channels as desktop processors, and that is decisive for tasks limited by RAM bandwidth: analytical databases, caches, computation, virtualisation with dozens of guest machines. The median memory size in EPYC plans is noticeably higher than for Xeon and Ryzen, and the ceiling reaches 768 GB.

The second advantage is PCIe lanes. Even a single socket is enough to connect a dozen NVMe drives directly to the processor without splitters. That is why about three quarters of EPYC plans come with NVMe, and a database server with an array of several fast disks can be built on this platform without compromises. Check whether hardware RAID is used or the disks are passed to the system directly: for ZFS and software RAID the latter is more convenient.

Network: where a port faster than gigabit is needed

Ports of 10 Gbit/s and above are noticeably more common with EPYC than with other processors in the catalogue: about a third of the plans have more than a gigabit. That makes sense: a machine with dozens of cores easily generates traffic a gigabit port cannot carry. For distributing files or video or replication between data centres, compare offers in the 10 Gbit/s link selection. Check whether bandwidth is guaranteed or the port is shared at the switch level, and whether traffic is included in the price.

Timelines, setup fee and locations

More than half of EPYC plans come with a one-off setup fee, and for expensive configurations it can be comparable to a month's rent. Calculate the first year's cost before comparing monthly prices. Large Genoa and Turin machines are often built to order, which takes one to several days; EPYC ready for instant delivery are less common.

Most offers are in Europe: Germany, France, the UK and Poland, as well as Canada and Singapore. In Russia there are still noticeably fewer EPYC than Xeon. For a Russian audience the nearest option with a wide choice is dedicated servers in Germany, usually 30–50 ms from Moscow.

FAQ

How is EPYC 4004 different from a regular Ryzen?

The core and socket are the same, but EPYC 4004 officially supports ECC memory and is designed for server boards with remote management. In performance the 4464P is close to the Ryzen 9 7900.

Which to choose: EPYC 7702P or the new Genoa?

The 7702P gives 64 cores on DDR4 and is usually cheaper; it is enough for virtualisation and background computation. Genoa is faster per core and works with DDR5 and PCIe 5.0, so it wins on databases and memory-intensive tasks.

How many NVMe drives can an EPYC server take?

The limit is usually set by the chassis, not the processor: there are enough PCIe lanes for a dozen or more drives. Check the number of free bays and whether disks can be added later with the host before ordering.

Do I need a dual-processor EPYC?

Rarely: a single Genoa or Turin socket already gives up to 96–192 cores and twelve memory channels. Two processors are justified when you need more memory than fits on one board, or when software licensing is cheaper with that setup.

Is EPYC suitable for virtualisation on Proxmox?

Yes, it is one of the platform's main tasks: many cores, large memory and hardware virtualisation support. For a home lab or a small cluster the 4004 is enough; for dozens of guest machines, 7003 or 9004 is better.

Why do EPYC plans have such a large setup fee?

The host often builds expensive configurations for a specific customer, and the one-off payment covers the risk of the server being returned after a month. With payment a year in advance the setup fee is often reduced or waived.

How much does dedicated servers with AMD EPYC cost?

From 101 $ per month. A quarter of plans are cheaper than 336 $, half are cheaper than 611 $. In total 152 plans from 23 hosts.

Can I pay for dedicated servers with AMD EPYC by bank card or cryptocurrency?

By bank card at 15 hosts of 23 (65%), by cryptocurrency at 5 (22%). Payment methods for each plan are in the Payment column.

How much does dedicated servers with AMD EPYC with 2 GB of RAM cost?

From 101 $ per month; with 4 GB from 101 $, with 8 GB from 101 $.

Which countries have the most plans?

Most plans are in in Germany, in France and in the UK. You can pick a country in the filter, and prices and payment methods will update.
