Ryzen as a dedicated server: high clock speed at desktop platform prices

A Ryzen server is built from the same processors found in gaming and workstation PCs. Hosts put them in racks for one property: Ryzen's clock speed and per-core performance are higher than those of most server chips from the same year. In return you have to accept the limitations of a desktop platform, and it is worth knowing them before ordering.

Which models appear and how they differ

  • Ryzen 5 3600, Ryzen 7 3700X, Ryzen 9 3900: Zen 2 on the AM4 socket, six to twelve cores, DDR4. The most affordable options, already behind newer generations in per-core speed.
  • Ryzen 9 5900X and 5950X: Zen 3, twelve and sixteen cores. The most common models in the catalogue: a mature platform, good clock speed and a low price.
  • Ryzen 9 7900, 7950X and 7950X3D: Zen 4 on AM5, DDR5 and PCIe 5.0. The X3D letters mean an enlarged level-3 cache, which especially helps game servers with a large world.
  • Ryzen 9 9950X: Zen 5, sixteen cores and the highest per-core performance among the processors in the table.

The per-core difference between generations reaches tens of percent, so a twelve-core 7900 often outperforms a sixteen-core 5950X in tasks that cannot load all threads.

Where high clock speed pays off

Single-threaded performance is decisive where the main thread cannot be split up. Typical examples are servers for Minecraft, Rust, CS2 and other games where the world is simulated on one core; building C++ and Rust projects, where each file compiles quickly; single-threaded parts of 1C (a popular Russian accounting suite) and PHP applications; emulators and CI test benches. Game projects have a separate selection for a game server, and how Ryzen behaves in a virtual machine is described on the VPS on Ryzen page.

Limitations of the desktop platform

Memory. Ryzen has only two channels, and the capacity ceiling is 128 GB on AM4 and 192 GB on AM5. If a database or cache needs more, you will have to choose from server processors.

ECC. Regular Ryzen do not officially guarantee ECC operation: on some boards it can be enabled, but only unbuffered, and on others it does not work at all. Ryzen does not support registered memory. PRO series models and the server version of the same platform, EPYC 4004, support ECC officially; you can compare them on the dedicated servers on EPYC page.

Management. Desktop boards rarely have built-in IPMI. Some hosts connect an external KVM-over-IP on request, sometimes for a fee and for a limited time. If you plan to install your own system with disk encryption or often experiment with networking, check this in advance.

Disks and network. A board usually has two M.2 slots, so the typical configuration is a pair of mirrored NVMe drives, with no room for a large array. The port is gigabit in the vast majority of plans; 10 Gbit/s is rare.

Locations and choosing between similar plans

Most Ryzen servers are in Germany, the USA, Canada and the UK; there are fewer in Russia and Finland, but for game projects with an audience from the CIS these are the best options for latency: from Moscow they are usually a few to a few dozen milliseconds away, while players get about 30–50 ms to Germany. Players elsewhere in Europe will usually be better served by German or UK sites. A setup fee appears in roughly a third to two fifths of the plans, and Windows can be installed on all of them. With the same processor model, compare memory speed, the number and type of disks, DDoS protection and guaranteed port bandwidth. A full overview of all processors and countries is in the dedicated server rental section.

FAQ

How reliable is a desktop processor in round-the-clock operation?

Ryzen chips themselves run stably under constant load; the weak spots are more often desktop power supplies and boards. With a rented server the host maintains the hardware, so what matters to the customer is the replacement time on failure stated in the terms.

Can I overclock Ryzen on a rented server?

No, customers usually have no access to BIOS settings, and hosts keep clocks at stock levels for stability. Models with the letter X already run at high clock speeds with automatic boost.

Is 64 GB of memory enough for a game server?

For one or two large modded Minecraft or Rust servers it is usually more than enough. If you plan to run a dozen game servers and a database on the machine, take 128 GB.

Which to choose: Ryzen 9 5950X or 7950X?

The 7950X is noticeably faster per core and works with DDR5, which shows in games and compilation. The 5950X is cheaper and remains a good choice for tasks where core count matters more than clock speed.

Is Ryzen suitable for file storage?

Poorly: few drive bays, no registered ECC memory and rarely hardware RAID. For storage, a Xeon or EPYC server with hard drives is better value.

Can I run virtual machines on Ryzen?

Yes, hardware virtualisation is supported, and Proxmox or KVM work without problems. The limit will be memory capacity: you cannot fit more than 128–192 GB on this platform.

How much does dedicated servers with AMD Ryzen cost?

From 56.01 $ per month. A quarter of plans are cheaper than 112 $, half are cheaper than 170 $. In total 98 plans from 26 hosts.

Can I pay for dedicated servers with AMD Ryzen by bank card or cryptocurrency?

By bank card at 20 hosts of 26 (77%), by cryptocurrency at 4 (15%). Payment methods for each plan are in the Payment column.

How much does dedicated servers with AMD Ryzen with 2 GB of RAM cost?

From 56.01 $ per month; with 4 GB from 56.01 $, with 8 GB from 56.01 $.

Which countries have the most plans?

Most plans are in in Germany, in the UK and in the USA. You can pick a country in the filter, and prices and payment methods will update.
