VPS in Romania: fast networks inside the EU and the rules that apply
Romania is known in the hosting world for two reasons. The first is strong network infrastructure: the country has long been among Europe's leaders in home internet speed, fibre reaches even small towns, and data centres buy bandwidth at prices below Western European ones. The second is its legal framework: an EU country with its own procedure for handling complaints. Both sides are worth understanding before you order.
How Romanian hosts handle complaints
Romanian providers handle complaints under European and Romanian law: they review the claim, ask the customer for an explanation and act on well-founded complaints and court orders. In addition, the country's Constitutional Court has in the past twice struck down laws on blanket retention of communications data, and that history has strengthened Romania's image as a place where privacy is taken seriously.
It is not an offshore jurisdiction. Romania is an EU member: GDPR, European copyright rules and the obligation to comply with court orders all apply. A server gets switched off fastest for:
- spam and phishing pages — mail services and banks complain about them, and no host will tolerate them;
- outgoing DDoS attacks, scanning and password brute-forcing, including from a compromised server;
- malware and anything related to child exploitation — the reaction is immediate in any country;
- repeated well-founded complaints from rights holders backed by the local procedure.
Look for a particular host's rules in its acceptable use policy (AUP): they vary widely between providers in the same country.
Network and latency
Most Romanian capacity is concentrated in Bucharest, home to the InterLAN and RoNIX internet exchanges, plus several regional centres. The selection for the capital is VPS in Bucharest. From Frankfurt or Vienna to Bucharest you can usually expect around 20–35 ms, from London or Paris a little more, and from the US east coast roughly 110–130 ms. Some carriers route traffic through Frankfurt or Vienna even for nearby countries, which adds a few milliseconds. Before paying, check a test IP from your own connection, and for latency-sensitive tasks compare several hosts.
For its neighbours Romania is more convenient than it seems: routes to Moldova, Bulgaria, Serbia and the whole Balkan region are short. A project for a Romanian-speaking audience is logically hosted here or in neighbouring Moldova.
What people use a Romanian VDS for
- A corporate VPN and proxies. Remote office access for a team in Eastern Europe, moderate latency and generous traffic. Configurations with KVM are on the VPS for WireGuard page.
- Storage and backups. The selection includes plans with large HDD disks for little money — for archives, backups and media libraries where disk speed is secondary.
- Websites and forums for a Romanian and Balkan audience: media, reviews, community projects that benefit from short local routes.
- Backends for Eastern Europe and the Balkans: game servers, messenger bots, APIs.
Before ordering, check the reputation of the IP address you are given. Ranges of budget hosts end up on anti-spam lists more often, and some services greet such addresses with captchas or restrictions. Check the IP against public blocklists in the first hours of the rental: if the address is "dirty", most providers will replace it on request. For a mail server this is especially important — with a tarnished reputation your emails will land in spam.
Configuration is standard: for a VPN or proxy one core and 1–2 GB of RAM on KVM are enough, but a port of 1 Gbps or more and a genuinely unmetered plan matter; for websites take NVMe, for archives a large HDD.
A project that breaks the law will be switched off in Romania just as anywhere else. Make backups to another location regardless of the country.
Payment and sign-up
Romanian hosts usually only ask for an email at sign-up, though the larger ones may request an ID if a payment looks suspicious. Cards and PayPal are widely accepted, and a noticeable share of providers take cryptocurrency; the selection is VPS in Romania paid with crypto. The "Payment" column in the table above shows the methods for each plan, and prices are converted into your currency so they are easy to compare with neighbouring countries.
One practical note: Romanian hosts' support works on Eastern European Time, one hour ahead of Central Europe, so you rarely have to wait until night for a ticket reply. Most answer in English.
