What kind of VPS does a Minecraft server need
A Minecraft Java Edition server is limited not by the number of cores but by a single core. All the game logic — mobs, redstone, physics, player handling — runs in the main thread, which has to keep up with 20 ticks per second. As soon as a tick no longer fits into 50 ms, TPS drops, and players see "rubber-banding" blocks and teleporting mobs. That's why, when choosing a VPS for Minecraft, you look at CPU clock speed first and everything else second.
CPU: clock speed matters more than cores
Aim for 3.5 GHz or more in turbo mode, the higher the better. Desktop-class and gaming server lines like AMD Ryzen are noticeably faster in single-threaded work than server CPUs with many slow cores. You still need two cores: the second is taken by the Java garbage collector, chunk loading, networking and the operating system itself. Four or more make sense for modpacks and several servers on one machine. The high-frequency CPU VPS selection will help you compare options.
How much RAM to take
- 2–3 GB — a vanilla or Paper server for a group of up to 10 friends.
- 4–6 GB — Paper with plugins for 20–40 players, small Fabric packs.
- 8–12 GB — large Forge or NeoForge modpacks with hundreds of mods.
Don't give Java all of the plan's memory: leave 1–1.5 GB for the system, and use Aikar's flags with G1GC for the heap. An unnecessarily large heap also hurts — garbage collector pauses grow longer.
Server software and settings
The vanilla server.jar is the slowest option. Paper and its forks give many times better performance and support Bukkit/Spigot plugins. For mods there's Fabric with optimisation mods (Lithium, FerriteCore) and Forge/NeoForge for heavy packs. Two lines in server.properties save the most TPS: view-distance and simulation-distance. Pre-generate the world with the Chunky plugin — then the server won't generate chunks on the fly when players scatter in all directions.
Disk, network and attack protection
NVMe speeds up loading and saving chunks, which is noticeable on a large map. Autosaves and world backups are best copied to a separate server or storage. Location matters for ping: put the server in the same country or region as most of your players; for a European audience, Germany or the Netherlands will do.
Public Minecraft servers are attacked often — both by network floods and by bots that join the game en masse. Choose a host with traffic filtering, and against bots put a Velocity proxy with an anti-bot plugin in front.
