Dedicated server in Switzerland: its own data law, recognised by the EU

Switzerland is chosen not for price or the lowest latency but for its legal framework and its standing with corporate clients. As of 3 November 2026 the catalogue lists 73 Swiss plans from 6 hosts. The minimum price is about $67 a month and the median about $411, one of the highest medians among the European countries in the catalogue and well above Finland, Italy or Spain. Some plans are one configuration that can be placed in several countries, including the UK, Spain, Italy and Austria, so check that Switzerland is actually selected when ordering.

Data protection law and regulator

Switzerland is not an EU member, so GDPR does not apply there directly. Instead there is the revised Federal Act on Data Protection (revFADP, nDSG in German), adopted by parliament in September 2020 and in force since 1 September 2023. It brought Swiss rules closer to the EU ones: records of processing activities, impact assessments for high-risk processing, a duty to report breaches to the regulator, and privacy by default. Supervision lies with the Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC). Unlike GDPR, fines of up to CHF 250,000 for intentional violations are imposed on the responsible individual rather than the company.

For a server owner with customers in Europe, the key point is the European Commission's adequacy decision. The EU has recognised Swiss data protection as adequate since 2000, and in January 2024, in its first review since GDPR took effect, it confirmed that decision. Personal data can therefore flow from the EU to a server in Zurich or Geneva without standard contractual clauses or transfer impact assessments, just as within the EU.

What a Swiss server is used for

  • Corporate storage and document management for companies that work with Swiss partners, or are registered in the country themselves and want their data under local law.
  • B2B services close to the financial sector: reporting, accounting and analytics systems where clients' contracts explicitly require hosting in Switzerland.
  • Backups for European companies in a second jurisdiction: a location outside the EU but with recognised protection keeps transfers straightforward.

For projects where price and hardware choice come first and the jurisdiction does not matter, it is easier to start with the general selection of dedicated servers in Europe or in Germany, which have many times more plans.

Network: SwissIX and ports

The country's largest internet exchange is SwissIX, a non-profit association founded in 2001. Its nodes are in Zurich, Glattbrugg, Basel, Bern and Lupfig, and more than two hundred operators and content providers are connected. A server in a Swiss data centre gets direct interconnection with local providers, and Frankfurt and Milan are close by, so latency to Germany, Austria and Northern Italy stays low.

Fast ports are more common than average: two thirds of plans have 1 Gbit/s, but roughly one in five offers 10 or 20 Gbit/s, and a few 40 Gbit/s. Unmetered traffic comes with 38% of plans among those where the host states its terms; the rest have a quota. DDoS filtering is included in about 78% of offers and IPv6 in nearly 80%.

Hardware and terms

Almost three quarters of plans run on Intel Xeon, often not new platforms: the most common model is the E5-2680 v4, alongside the E5-2670 v2 and even the 2010-era X5670, as well as the Xeon E3-1230 v5 and low-voltage E3-1265L v3 and E3-1275L v3. The Xeon Gold 6134 and AMD EPYC 7662 are more modern but few. The median server has 32 GB of memory, with a catalogue maximum of 256 GB. Disks split almost evenly between SATA SSD and HDD, with NVMe in about one plan in ten. With this hardware, the high median means you are paying mainly for the location rather than performance, so compare a dedicated server in Switzerland by the task, not by price per core.

On the plus side, no Swiss plan charges a setup fee, and about a third of machines are delivered right after payment. International cards are accepted on about 41% of plans and PayPal on 36%; bank invoices are rare, so ask the host in advance if your accounting requires one.
