VPS in Dallas: the middle of the US, equally far from both coasts

Dallas is the main hosting hub of the central United States. The city sits roughly halfway between the Atlantic and the Pacific, backbones linking the east, west and south of the country run through it, and the networks of hundreds of carriers meet in the Infomart building and nearby campuses. Internet exchanges operate here too, including DE-CIX Dallas and the Equinix Internet Exchange. For a server owner this means one thing: from Dallas almost any point in the continental US is about equally close.

Why people pick the middle of the country

New York and Los Angeles are both usually 30–40 ms from Dallas, Chicago about 25 ms and Miami roughly 30 ms. Neither coast gets ideal latency, but neither suffers either. If your audience is spread across the whole country, one server in Dallas often replaces two regional ones, and it is easier to maintain: one database, one copy of the files, no syncing between coasts. A comparison of the coasts and the general conditions of the US market are on the VPS in the USA page; this one covers what sets Dallas apart.

  • Game servers for all of North America. A central point gives players on both coasts comparable ping, so many communities keep a shared server here. Hardware requirements are in the VPS for a game server selection.
  • Services for the US and Mexico. Monterrey and Mexico City are closer to Texas than to either coast. If most of your audience is south of the border, compare with the plans on the VPS in Mexico page.
  • Mobile app backends and APIs with users across the country, where predictable latency matters more than the lowest latency for one region.
  • A standby site for a project on the east or west coast: a different region, a different power grid, while latency to the primary server stays low.

Ping from Europe

From Frankfurt and Amsterdam, Dallas is usually 110–120 ms away, from London slightly less: traffic crosses the Atlantic to the east coast and adds another 30–40 ms on top of the New York figure. From Central and Eastern Europe expect 130–150 ms. That is acceptable for a website and an API, but remote desktop work from Europe already feels sluggish. If the server is mainly for European users and America is secondary, Dallas is a poor choice: New York is closer to Europe. Check the real figure with the host's test IP before paying.

"Dallas" often means the whole metro area

Data centres in the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex are spread over dozens of kilometres: Richardson, Plano, Carrollton, Garland, Irving, Fort Worth. Hosts usually just write "Dallas" or "DFW". Latency between facilities in the metro area is a few milliseconds, which does not matter for a website. What matters more:

  • with cheap plans "Dallas" sometimes means a server in another Texas city — check the data centre name or run a traceroute to the test IP;
  • ask whether the facility has its own DDoS filtering: game servers in the middle of the country are attacked often;
  • compare the traffic limit and port speed — for a game server or file delivery these matter more than an extra gigabyte of RAM.

Keep the time zone in mind as well: Dallas runs on US Central Time, six to seven hours behind Central Europe. Local support's working day falls in the European afternoon and night, so plan maintenance and migrations in advance, and check in the plan description whether support is 24/7 and whether it answers in chat or only by ticket.

The Texas power grid and state law

Texas runs its own power grid, ERCOT, which is barely connected to the rest of the country. Electricity is relatively cheap here, hence the moderate hosting prices, but in February 2021 a severe freeze caused massive outages. Large data centres ran on diesel generators at the time, while some smaller facilities had interruptions. For an important project, find out what power backup the data centre has and keep a copy of your data in another region.

Since July 2024 the state has had the Texas Data Privacy and Security Act: if your project collects data on Texas residents, it needs a clear privacy policy and a procedure for answering user requests. Hosts handle copyright complaints under the federal DMCA. If you also serve users in the EU, the GDPR applies regardless of where the server is: choose a host that signs a data processing agreement and covers transfers with standard contractual clauses or the EU–US Data Privacy Framework.

Payment

Dallas plans are mostly paid by card or PayPal, with some hosts also accepting cryptocurrency as one of the payment methods and issuing invoices to companies. US providers may ask you to verify your details, so give real information and keep backups off the server. The payment methods for each plan are in the "Payment" column of the table above.

FAQ

What ping can I expect to Dallas from Europe?

Usually 110–120 ms from Frankfurt and Amsterdam, slightly less from London and 130–150 ms from Eastern Europe. The exact value depends on your provider and the host.

What is the ping from Dallas to New York and Los Angeles?

About 30–40 ms in both directions. That is why Dallas is chosen when both coasts need to be served equally.

Which is better for a US game server: Dallas or New York?

For players from all over the country, Dallas: it gives both coasts even ping. If players are mostly on the US east coast and in Europe, New York is better.

What does DFW mean in a plan description?

It is the Dallas–Fort Worth metro area. The server may be in Richardson, Plano, Carrollton or Dallas itself; latency between these facilities is a few milliseconds.

Is a server in Dallas suitable for an audience in Mexico?

Yes, the large Mexican cities are closer to Texas than to the US coasts. But if almost all your users are in Mexico, compare latency with local locations.

Is the Texas power grid reliable enough for data centres?

Large facilities have generators and fuel reserves, so they got through even the 2021 outages. With smaller data centres, ask about backup power separately and keep a copy of your data in another region.
