Dedicated server in Europe: pick the country first, then the hardware

As of 3 November 2026 the European selection of the catalogue holds 1,889 plans from 63 hosts. The cheapest machines cost about $20 a month and the median one about $219. Germany has the most offers (roughly a third), followed by France, the UK and the Netherlands, then Poland, Finland, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Romania and Sweden. Many configurations are sold in several countries at once, so when ordering check that the cart shows the location you actually chose the plan for. When choosing a dedicated server in Europe, settle on the country first and then move on to its own selection.

Whose latency matters

Start with where your users are. For an audience spread across the EU, Frankfurt and Amsterdam sit in the middle of the network and reach most European capitals over short paths. For users in the UK and Ireland, London is the natural choice; for Southern Europe, Milan or Madrid; for the Nordics and the Baltics, Helsinki or Stockholm. If you also serve North America, the western edge of Europe (London, Paris, Amsterdam) shaves a few milliseconds off the transatlantic leg.

The reason a few cities are so central is internet exchange points. Frankfurt hosts DE-CIX, one of the largest exchanges in the world by peak traffic, Amsterdam has AMS-IX and London has LINX. Hundreds of networks exchange traffic there directly instead of paying for transit through third parties. In the north the same role is played by Netnod in Stockholm. A server in a city with a large exchange gets more direct routes and more even latency to different countries. Popular destinations have their own pages: dedicated servers in Germany, in Finland and in Switzerland.

Law: GDPR, the UK and Switzerland

Every EU country applies the same GDPR, supervised by the national authority where the data controller is established. For the owner of a server holding Europeans' data the obligations are the same in Berlin, Warsaw or Helsinki: a data processing agreement with the host, a clear retention period and a breach notification procedure. After Brexit the UK runs its own UK GDPR, and Switzerland, which is not in the EU, has its own data protection act, revised with effect from 1 September 2023. The EU recognises both as providing adequate protection, so transfers from the EU there need no extra contractual mechanisms. If you are a non-European company serving EU customers, an EU location does not remove your GDPR duties, but it keeps the data flow simple.

Price spread and setup fees

The same class of machine costs noticeably different amounts depending on the country. Medians for several countries in the catalogue: Italy about $177, Finland about $236, Bulgaria about $253, Spain about $299, Romania about $335, Sweden about $369, Switzerland about $411. Part of the gap reflects the mix rather than the location: where there are more older Xeons and desktop chips, the median is lower.

About 13% of European plans charge a one-off setup fee, but it is unevenly spread. In Finland roughly a third of plans have one, while in Italy, Sweden and Switzerland the catalogue shows none at all. When comparing countries, add the setup fee to a year of rent rather than looking at the monthly price alone.

Hardware and disks across Europe

More than half of European plans run on Intel Xeon of various generations. Ryzen and desktop Intel Core together account for about a quarter: inexpensive high-clock machines, usually without ECC memory. AMD EPYC appears in roughly one plan in ten, Xeon Gold and Platinum less often. The median server has 64 GB of memory, and half of the plans fall between 32 and 128 GB.

  • HDD: about a third of plans, for archives, backups and file storage where the price per terabyte matters.
  • SATA SSD: about 39% of plans, for websites, mail and small databases.
  • NVMe: about a quarter of plans, for databases, virtualisation and build servers.

Most plans list a 1 Gbit/s port, about one in twenty a 10 Gbit/s port. Unmetered traffic comes with 63% of plans among those where the host states its traffic terms. DDoS filtering is included in about 70% of offers and IPv6 in two thirds. About 39% of machines are delivered right after payment; the rest take from a few hours to a couple of days.

Paying for it

More than half of European plans can be paid by international card and almost half via PayPal. Bank invoices for companies are less common, roughly one offer in seven, so if your accounting needs an invoice in euros, filter for it before comparing prices. If a virtual machine is enough for the project, also compare VPS in Europe.

FAQ

Which European city gives the best latency across the EU?

Frankfurt and Amsterdam, thanks to the DE-CIX and AMS-IX exchanges and their central position. For users concentrated in one region, a server in that region is better still.

Does GDPR apply in Switzerland and the UK?

No, they have their own laws: UK GDPR in Britain and the revised Federal Act on Data Protection in Switzerland. The requirements are close to the EU ones, and the EU recognises their level of protection as adequate.

Where in Europe are there no setup fees?

In the catalogue, plans in Italy, Sweden and Switzerland have none and Spain almost none. In Finland a one-off fee appears on roughly a third of plans.

Frankfurt or Amsterdam for a European audience?

Both sit on the largest exchanges and give short routes across Europe. Decide on the hardware and price of the specific plan; the latency difference for users is usually small.

Do I need an EU server to comply with GDPR?

No, GDPR follows the data, not the server. An EU location simply avoids the extra paperwork needed for transfers outside the EU and countries with adequacy decisions.

Why is one plan listed in several countries?

Many hosts sell one configuration in different data centres. Price and delivery time can differ by location, so check the selected country before paying.

How much does dedicated servers in Europe cost?

From 20.00 $ per month. A quarter of plans are cheaper than 148 $, half are cheaper than 219 $. In total 1,910 plans from 65 hosts.

Can I pay for dedicated servers in Europe by bank card or cryptocurrency?

By bank card at 46 hosts of 65 (71%), by cryptocurrency at 21 (32%). Payment methods for each plan are in the Payment column.

How much does dedicated servers in Europe with 2 GB of RAM cost?

From 20.00 $ per month; with 4 GB from 20.00 $, with 8 GB from 20.00 $.

Which countries have the most plans?

Most plans are in in Germany, in France and in the Netherlands. You can pick a country in the filter, and prices and payment methods will update.
